The right clothing makes a desert safari more comfortable from the first dune drive to the final evening at camp. You do not need specialist outdoor gear—just breathable layers, secure footwear and a few practical essentials suited to the time of day.
Choose lightweight, breathable clothing
Loose-fitting cotton, linen or technical fabrics work well in the UAE climate. A comfortable T-shirt, blouse or long-sleeved sun shirt with lightweight trousers is a reliable choice. Avoid very heavy denim during warmer months because it can feel restrictive in the heat.
Wear secure footwear
Closed trainers or well-fitted sandals are both suitable, depending on the activities included. Trainers offer better support for walking on dunes, sandboarding or moving around uneven camp areas. Flip-flops are easy to lose in soft sand and provide little support.
Dune drive and camp visit: trainers or strapped sandals.
Sandboarding: closed shoes with a secure fit.
Photography-only stop: comfortable sandals can be sufficient.
Bring a light layer for the evening
Desert temperatures can drop after sunset, especially from November to March. A thin cardigan, overshirt or light jacket is easy to carry and can make the return journey much more comfortable. In summer, a layer is still useful for strongly air-conditioned vehicles.
Dress respectfully and comfortably
There is no need for formal clothing. Clothing that covers the shoulders and reaches around the knee is a comfortable, respectful option for shared tours and traditional camp settings. Most importantly, choose pieces that let you sit, step into a vehicle and move across sand easily.
Sun protection matters
The desert sun can feel strong even outside peak summer. Pack sunglasses with good UV protection, sunscreen and a hat that fits securely. A lightweight scarf can protect your neck and is also useful if the wind lifts fine sand.
Keep your phone, sunglasses and small valuables in a zipped bag during dune driving. Loose items can easily move around inside the vehicle.

Clothing to avoid

For a morning safari, prioritise sun protection and breathable layers. For an evening safari, bring one extra layer and consider long trousers for the cooler hours after sunset. Your tour description should confirm the activities, so use that list to make the final footwear choice.
